61. Toddler food allergies review and new free-from discoveries

Two years after his last review, my Son and I optimistically, but with some trepidation, attended the allergy clinic. My husband and I kept our fingers crossed for his Paediatric Doctor to tell us our Son had outgrown some of his allergies to cow’s milk/dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts, and pistachios.

As well as food allergies, our Son suffers from asthma and eczema. At home, we manage well. When traveling, armed with EpiPens, inhalers, and antihistamines, we manage ok but find eating out somewhat challenging.

Friends and family offer comfort by saying:- “Hopefully, he will grow out of it…” words we hang onto. But on seeing his report, I was disheartened. Sadly, nothing had changed – and our Son was still allergic to all the same foods.

Surprisingly, his score for milk had dropped, suggesting that the Malted Milk biscuits, which he eats in small quantities since he was encouraged to do so at his first diagnosis in 2021, are building up his tolerance to it.

To understand if cooked eggs and nuts can be introduced to his system to tackle the allergies, similar to milk, we’ve been advised to run a blood test and hopefully undergo a controlled test at the hospital before moving to a ladders diet at home.

Meanwhile, we continue to manage his allergies using the varied range of alternative foods that are widely available. We are so grateful for this and love that the list keeps expanding! In addition to products shared previously in blogs 6 & 41, here are some of our new favourite discoveries.
