Life has its ups and downs – and it is scientifically proven that when we’re rich with emotions, great relationships, and a sense of purpose in life, we accomplish things and feel happier and more fulfilled.
So, to plan for happiness and more in life, our aim must be to set and achieve goals that give us positive emotions, great friendships, and purpose and meaning.
To find happiness and feel more fulfilled in life, we can set goals and make a plan to:
- Take care of ourselves better
- Find activities and hobbies that bring us joy
- Take time to build quality relationships with supportive people
- Practice mindfulness regularly
- Write our feelings down
- Talk (or vent) to trusted friends and family
- Take time out for ourselves, breathe, meditate, clear the mind
- Focus on problem-solving and asking ourselves, “What are my solutions, and what can I do about it now?”
- Take time to engage in acts of kindness and give back to others
The Magic of Giving Back
On the last point, I have been volunteering since 2006 and can’t advocate for it enough.
By volunteering, I am happier and more fulfilled in life. It’s also why I’ve spent my last 20 years working on behaviour change and social value campaigns.
Volunteering and giving back to others, especially those most in need, help me in multifaceted ways, personally and professionally. It makes me happier and healthier emotionally, mentally, and physically!
Since 2006, I’ve volunteered in youth work, connected and engaged with young people, acted as a trustee for a youth charity, coached, and given one-on-one mentoring.
Professional Gains
The benefits include:
- Expanding my own horizons and outlook on life by enriching others and offering, in some cases, life-changing experiences. For example, during school visits, workshops, and career talks at schools and colleges to give young learners new skills and knowledge.
- Improving my overall health & well-being making me more resilient and productive at work.
- Enhancing my leadership skills.
- Expanding my professional network.
- Deepening my sense of purpose and impact in the community.
When you receive feedback about the difference you make or see the impact of your work, you feel you’ve ignited magic! The feeling is rewarding and truly addictive!
It inspires and motivates you to do more – just like an addiction, your brain and senses are hijacked with pleasure and gratification, getting you hooked to do more.
